How the score is worked out

IQ scores compare people: 100 is the average, and about two thirds of people score between 85 and 115. So your score depends on how other people do on the same puzzles.

We log every finished test anonymously (score, time and which puzzles were right, never names or emails) and work out scores from where a result falls among real test-takers. Until enough people have taken this version, the score is marked as a provisional estimate and uses a stated starting assumption.

Questions

Is the IQ test really free?
Yes. You take all 24 puzzles and see your score on the IQ scale without paying and without giving an email address. The full report is an optional extra for $14.99.
How long does it take?
You have 20 minutes for 24 puzzles. Most of the early puzzles take well under a minute; the last few take longer.
Is this an official IQ test?
No online test is. Clinical IQ tests such as the WAIS are given one to one by a trained psychologist. This is an online reasoning test: it measures how you do on its puzzles and puts that on the IQ scale, and the score works as an estimate, not a diagnosis.
Why might my score say provisional?
A score on the IQ scale means comparing you with other people. Until enough people have taken this version, the score uses a stated assumption instead. The How the score works page explains both methods.
Can I take it on my phone?
Yes. The puzzles are drawn to fit a phone screen. A larger screen makes the detailed drawings easier to see.
Can I retake the test?
Yes, as often as you like. Retakes usually score higher because the puzzles are familiar, so only first attempts count when we compare people.
